Things to consider
  • Take a look at a relative's closet. What shirt doesn't he wear anymore? Ask him if you can have it to create something new and exciting! Go to a local goodwill. Find a men's shirt. They should only be a dollar or two!
  • What parts of the shirt can you use? You don't have to use the entire shirt! Do you want to use two shirts sewed together?
  • Look online! There are plenty of ways to alter dress shirts. Find a few ideas and change the design to suit your own needs.
  • You can use any other material of your choice in addition to the dress shirt. The dress shirt should be the majority of the material OR it must be apparent that you've used a dress shirt.
  • Please, no tube tops -- those are too easy!

Grading Criteria
  • Creativity
  • Innovativeness
  • Technical Quality
  • Participation

Background
Upcycling is a HUGE trend right now that is making its way to the fashion industry. Starting in crafts circles, upcyling has made its way onto blogs, Twitter, and Pinterest. So what is upcycling? Upcycling is the process of converting old, waste, or unusable materials into something new and usable. Think about how upcycling relates to sustainability. Usually the product of upcycling, when executed well, is met with great enthusiasm by non-artists, ie a "wow factor." Just take a look at the photos below to see how you can turn unusable products into new and exciting things.

Assignment
Your assignment is to turn a men's dress shirt into something wearable. Use Adobe Voice on your iPad to document your process with images and your voice and put on your blog.

Adobe Voice
  • Your concept sketch
  • Photograph of the shirt before
  • Your process
  • Photograph of the final Product

Your assignment is to create a portfolio website showcasing your fashion work. You may use this for your college portfolio or for your personal use. You may create this site using Wix.com or Weebly.com. Take a look at other fashion designers or fashion blogs. Also, check out this site by Marissa Cote.

Your site should include the following:
  • Homepage: this could be a blog or a landing page
  • Portfolio: include all examples of your fashion design work from Fashion. You should also include at least 3 of your best drawings. I will teach you how to photograph/scan your artwork.
  • About: Your artist statement and photograph of you (we will work with Photography to have a professional image taken of you)
  • Contact: Contact page with your email address and/or a contact form

Steps:
  1. Compile all of your artwork. Be sure you have high quality photographs.
  2. Design your site in Weebly.com or Wix.com
  3. Upload your artwork and add captions
  4. Write your artist statement
  5. Have Mr. Mistler edit the statement
  6. Make any changes
  7. Check over your entire site
  8. Email me your url

How to write an artist statement:
  • An artist statement should describe the following: WHY YOU MAKE YOUR ART, WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE IT, WHAT IT SIGNIFIES OR REPRESENTS, WHAT'S UNIQUE OR SPECIAL ABOUT HOW YOU MAKE IT, and briefly, WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU. Answer those questions. See an example of an artist statement here.
  • First paragraph. Begin with a simple statement of why you do the work you do. Support that statement, telling the reader more about your goals and aspirations.

Second paragraph. Tell the reader how you make decisions in the course of your work. How and why do you select materials, techniques, themes? Keep it simple and tell the truth.

Third paragraph. Tell the reader a little more about your current work. How it grew out of prior work or life experiences. What are you exploring, attempting, challenging by doing this work.

Grading Criteria
  • Usage of topics outlined above
  • Technical Quality
Are my images high quality and the proper resolution? They should all be high quality jpegs.
I don't have any blank images or templates from Wix.
I don't have anything from the template that doesn't pertain to me.
  • Design
    Does my site looks professional?

    Is my site user friendly?
