Due Date:
Midyear: January 21

Background:
Who doesn't love a good movie? Many of you have movies that you can quote by heart. Movie poster design brings us into the realm of commercial art, meaning that this design would be created for advertising and selling. You must grab the viewer's attention quickly so that he/she wants to see the movie.

Assignment:
Your assignment is to recreate a movie poster design using iconic imagery.

Specs:
Size: 11x14
Color Mode: RGB
Resolution: 300 dpi

Steps:
  1. Read through this article on movie poster redesign. Also, read this page on poster design.
  2. Choose a film. Think of ways that you can recreate this poster without losing the original sense of the film but also not copying the design of the original poster.
  3. Draw 3 different sketches (for either 1 film or 3 different ones). Think of iconic imagery from the film. In the poster above, why does the park bench work in the redesign?
  4. Begin designing. You may use Photoshop OR Illustrator.
  5. Print your design on 11x14 paper (you may choose glossy OR matte)
  6. Read Feldman's Method of Art Criticism.
  7. In Drive, write a critique your own design. Please input both the original design and your re-design. Write a thoughtful analysis of your artwork and how it exemplifies good design, using the elements of art and principles of design and following Feldman's method. It should be at least 4 paragraphs according to that. Be sure to check your spelling and grammar.

Grading Criteria:
  • Project (worth 90 points)
  • Creativity
  • Innovativeness
  • Originality
  • Technical Quality and Craftsmanship
  • Critique (worth 10 points)
