About Illuminated Manuscripts
An illuminated manuscript is a text written by hand. These were historically created in the Medieval times by monks on parchment paper (made by stretched calf, sheep, or goat skin). Each manuscript was meticulously hand written. Usually the first letter of a chapter was decorated using pattern and design and colored very often with actual gold and silver leaf. The imagery was very important in the manuscripts because many people could not read.
