Picture
The blizzard bag assignments are meant to replace the work of TWO snow days. You must complete the assignment below by JUNE 1st and turn into the Google Drive hand in folder titled "Blizzard Bags Assignment". The assignment should take you about 90 minutes to complete from start to finish. If you do not complete the assignment, you will be marked two days absent. If you have any questions during the assignment, please see me in class or email me. Seniors are exempt from the blizzard bag assignment because they are not restricted to the 180 day school year from the DESE.

Project Description:
Your assignment is to create a cute or humorous character using Inkpad, a free app on the app store. The app works very much like Illustrator and is very easy to use.

Steps:
  1. Research vector characters. Look at professional designers. Check out: Pixar, Burnt Toast Creative,
  2. Write a 1 page description of the character including its name, location, backstory, and any other info.
  3. Download Inkpad.
  4. Draw your character using the pen tool.
  5. Save to camera roll.
  6. Upload the image AND the character description into the Drive folder titled: Blizzard Bag Assignment.

Objectives:
  • Study digital art by professional designers
  • Apply your drawing skills to create a fun vector
  • Use 3-dimensionality to create a more professional and realistic looking character

Things to consider:
  • You can use images of animals or people to use as reference -- just upload them into the Inkpad gallery.
  • What is your character's personality? How can you show it on its face?
  • An active pose is better than a passive pose.
  • Don't forget the background!

Final: Designing for a Client

6/7/2013

Picture
Background
Digital Publishing has been an amazing class; you all have proven your dedication to design, marketing, and advertising, all while impressing teachers and people in the community. Your final project is to find a client and create a design for them (logo, poster, website, etc).

Design
You may not ARBITRARILY design something for someone just because. Ask around if someone needs a poster or logo. Ms. Deacon, Mr. Larkin, Mr. Sullivan, or any teacher could be a good candidate. Likewise, go to a local business and ask if they need any free design work.

Analysis
  • Write a critique on your design. How did you use the elements of art and principles of design when creating this? How was the experience providing personal design services for a client? How did the client receive the artwork and how did he/she react? Was your design successful? Why or why not? What would you have done differently? *This analysis should be at least 1 page

Submission:
  • Submit the jpeg and name it "yourfullname.finalproject.jpeg"
  • Submit the analysis and name it "yourfullname.finalproject.doc"
  • Submit both files in the Google Drive Folder (click on the link)

Due Date: Friday, June 21st (by 11am)

Background
An infographic (Information Graphic) is a visual representation of information. It is a modern new way to relate information to today's advertising. Rather than reading an article on recycling, an infographic could be used in its place. Websites like http://infogr.am/ will allow you to make infographics, but they are not as innovative as ones designed by professional designers.

Assignment
Your assignment is to create an infographic based upon a cause. Some examples include: recycling, cancer, the beef industry, racisim, sexism, etc. Check out the examples below.

Steps
  1. Decide on your topic. Choose 3 topics in case one falls flat
  2. Make a list of imagery that you can use
  3. Collect the data (make sure to keep all of your sources)
  4. Draw a sketch
  5. We will talk about the sketches in class
  6. Design this in Illustrator
  7. Share it! (Facebook, Twitter, Google, Snapchat, anything). The person who's image has gone most "viral" will get an A+ and will win a prize.

Resources
  • Read this article on how to create an infographic.
  • Check out this presentation on what an infographic is:
  • Read this article to see what makes a great infographic. (http://marketingland.com/8-experts-talk-about-making-great-infographics-34958)

Grading
  • Creativity
  • Innovative design
  • Research/Data collected
  • Viral-ness of your design

Steps:
  1. Brainstorm and looking at logos
  2. Create 8 different concepts (sketches)
  3. Talk with the class about our concepts
  4. Learning about Logo Design
  5. Resolution, Vector vs Raster
  6. Begin in Photoshop or Illustrator
  7. Dimensions: 8x10
  8. Each student needs 2 DIFFERENT concepts
  9. You must also design a letterhead for both concepts
  10. Save the logo as "yourlastname.BDA.jpeg" and place into the ART-NAS server.
  11. Save the letterheads as "yourlastname.BDA.

From the client:
For the preview meeting, if we could see the logo on a 8.5 x 11 as letterhead and one on a poster board size . No color specifications. We do request, that at least one of the sample logos have the words: Burlington Disability Access Commission circle around the logo. Not all the designs have to have this, just one for us to sample.

We really would like the logo to be a way of people to recognize it and know that it represents the Burlington Disability Access Commission, just like Nike's logo, Champion's logo do for these companies etc. Our mission is to make town owned buildings (schools, town hall police station etc.) and recreation facilities accessible for persons with disabilities. We like to call ourselves differently-abled. This means that we can do things everyone else can do, just in a different way.
